“In 2003 I was struggling with chronic back pain due to scoliosis, when my physiotherapist suggested Pilates. By 2012 I was really enjoying the benefits of attending regular classes, so I took voluntary redundancy from my desk-based job, to try a complete change of career! At the end of 2013 I became a qualified Body Control Pilates teacher.”
Julie enjoys teaching small-group classes and working with individuals, and is still passionate about learning more about Pilates herself. Regularly attending courses at the Body Control Pilates Centre in London has taught her that everyone can benefit from Pilates - from beginners learning the principles of mat work, through to more advanced clients.
“I have recently completed training in working with those over the age of 60 – a very active age group (speaking with first-hand experience!) However, our needs change as we get older, so focus is more towards rebuilding muscle strength, whilst also considering common medical issues which we often have when we reach this stage of life.”
Julie is also qualified to teach clients on the Reformer, Tower, Arc and Cadillac, mums-to-be and new mums, performers and runners, through to those living with osteopenia, osteoporosis, chronic low back pain, knee pain, POTS and post-viral conditions, such as ME and long Covid.
“Pilates continues to help manage my spinal problems, and is my favourite way to spend some ‘me time’. Discovering Pilates was a life-changing experience for me, because it helped me build the strength that I needed, and also increase the flexibility I had lost.”
In her spare time Julie likes hill walking, working out in her home Pilates studio, watching motorsport and going to the theatre.
